The right fonts aren't always as easy to choose as one might think. I am challenged by this decision on each project.  I'm looking forward to taking typography to gain better insight on how to use certain fonts and make the message strong.

Useless Process from another perspective.  This step-by-step guide teaches its reader how to conduct useless meetings.

How to hold useless meetings: a step-by-step guide

Boring meetings seem to be part of working life.

And they're are more than just a waste of sandwiches, lukewarm fruit juice and filtered coffee that tastes like water (I know, don't criticise the coffee, you'll be old and weak one day yourself).

When they're deathly dull, meetings can be the biggest time-wasters out.

That's what caught my eye when I came across this guide, The art of holding useless meetings.

How to become a five-star time-wasting manager? According to this piece, all you need to do is stuff like start late, call meetings that have no real purpose, never have an agenda, never set an ending time, refuse to make any decisions, talk about how the organisation needs to have better meetings and always call another meeting.

Simple really. No wonder there are so many bad meetings.

And how do we make better meetings? There are some pretty simple rules:

Know why you are having a meeting (yes, it sounds obvious but think about it: how many meetings are held only because they're "always" held that day and time?); before you call one, ask yourself whether a meeting is the most effective way to get things done; know what you want from the meeting; use an agenda, and design it around questions like what needs to happen and in what order; stick to the agenda and choose an appropriate venue. Oh yeah, try to have it before lunch.

Any other tips? How many boring meetings go on at your workplace? And how do you deal with it? What are some of the most boring meetings you've been to?

for project 6, i'm considering designing a booklet that gives step-by-step instructions for making an elegant evening bag out of a placemat.  sure, there are several ways to make purses out of all kinds of things, including placemats, but i haven't found a site or a book that gives instructions for making Elegant Evening Bags out of a placemats.   these bags will be unique in that the individuals making them can customize them with decorative trims, ribbons, flowers, buttons, chains, and other embellishments. this booklet will teach the average person how to make a boutique-style purse with a placemat.

i don't believe we're really working on the last project for Words & Images.   i feel like jumping, yelling, running, and laughing because i'm so glad to be at this point.

i enjoyed the class for a lot of reasons:

  • challenging
  • informative
  • cool classmates and instructors
  • fun
  • etc...
i'm  also glad its ending for many reasons:
  • i get my Saturdays back
  • no more nightmares about critiques
  • no more going to bed at 2 or 3 a.m. (at least for a month)
  • time to catch up on movies
  • time to hang out with my family

how to paint abstract art

http://www.art-is-fun.com/how-to-paint-abstract-art.html

This web page gives a step-by-step process for making abstract art paintings.  I think this is a good example of process because it addresses each step in order, and by layers.  To complete the painting and get the desired look, the artist must follow the instructions in the order they're given.  Each step (layer) prepares the canvas for the next step (layer).  I tried this project using color paper (different colors) on a plain white canvas.  I started with a sketched outline of a saxophone and glued the torn pieces of paper over the sketched area.  Beautiful Result.

lately i find myself paying more attention to the product's story when I purchase something.  it's always easier to believe something when there's a story of its effectiveness attached to it.  since taking this class i'm somewhat disappointed if a product doesn't have a short story, especially if I don't know much about the item(s).

FASHION IS FUN, BUT MORE FUN WHEN IT'S ARTSY!  I love fashion and fabrics, but never really looked at them as art.  These colorful fabrics allow designers to create clothing on a different kind of canvas.  They allow the individual to become the canvas - a walking, breathing, moving work of art.

These photos represent three different forms of art.  The first photo shows that art can be on any type of canvas.  Musicians use instruments to express the artistic musical gifts they have. This guitar produces a beautiful music when played by a competent musician, but it's also beautiful to look at because someone has crafted into a visual work of art.  In the second photo, typography has created a human face. The artist used typefaces, point size, line length, leading (line spacing) and letter spacing to make an interesting work of art.  The third photo looks like an antique sewing machine, but it's a cake.  I'm sure a baker made this cake, but this baker is an artist as well.

I'm doing my documentary on my addiction to collecting shoes - ALL STYLES, ALL HEIGHTS, ALL YEAR LONG. At first, I thought this addiction only gripped females, but since joining SHOE-AHOLIC Anonymous, I've learned that millions of men suffer from this same addiction. I'm not seeking a cure - I just like the fact that I can admit it and finally take my shoes out of the closet.

This video gives some insight into our world... Explore...LOL...

Ok, I revised the texting campaign and I really believe it's working as a campaign. However, I'm still having paint splatter issues. I'm thinking of simply removing the splatter all together as a final revision. Please let me know what you all think. I am posting the revised ad and postcard front.

Just an interesting piece of SHOE ART. I'm still considering the Shoe Documentary idea.

Wow!
Ok, That's my exclamation mark for this blog...

What a week. I rewrote my article for the campaign, made revisions on the design, and now trying to organize my thoughts to write the story for my documentary.

Nonetheless, I press on...

I'm posting the first drafts of the campaign's postcard (front) and the magazine ad, without the revised text or design. For whatever reason, the back of the postcard won't upload properly. But, anyway, they're the comps. I will post the revisions once we get them back.

I really like the whole Beetle idea, but I absolutely love SHOES. Can't have enough. Anyone who knows me, knows I have it bad. I wonder if this really is a "Women Problem" or if this addiction crosses genders. It would be interesting to do a documentary about this. SHOES, SHOES, SHOES, SHOES, SHOES , and MORE SHOES!

Talk about Balancing the Page... Lately, I find myself trying to balance my life. Anyway, I changed the approach to the texting campaign, which I will post after the critique, but I'm struggling with the documentary. Thinking about doing something on Women's Obsessions with Shoes or The Birth, Death, and Re-Birth of the BUG - the Volkswagon Beetle. I'm really leaning toward the BUG - taking a look at how it has managed to remain popular, even after going off the scene for a while. It was also one of the first cars to take a leading part on the big screen in the movie HERBIE. And now it still seems to be one of the most popular cars on the road.

Still trying to decide which route to go with the campaign. Here is one of my ideas.

Writing, Designing, and Creating - the possibilities seem endless. This images has a quote by Thomas Edison that falls in line with Stephanie's suggestion to always keep a journal and write your thoughts down.

the combination of words and images are unending and quite fascinating. I now notice how they compliment each other, or totally disrespect each other on a page. the design and layout either works or it doesn't, and the designer holds the cards. What I find just as fascinating is designing words as images. Check out these images made with words and colors.

Vacationing in Orlando, but constantly thinking about how to approach the upcoming campaign. My plan is to put together a campaign against TEXTING WHILE DRIVING. One approach shows three different generations enjoying life as they grow older: First, I plan to show a group of friends attending a high school reunion; Next, a retirement party; and a the third would be a family reunion with seniors and children. The campaign would be called GROW OLD TEXTING.
I have another idea for this campaign which I will post a little later.

For now, I'll just share a couple of other interesting campaign samples I found online.

I've been doing a lot of thinking about the upcoming Cause & Effect assignment. One idea I'm considering is a campaign against Texting While Driving. I won't be able to use this video, but thought it was quite graphic and it gets the point across. So, I thought I'd share it.

Since time got away during the show and tell portion of class, I decided to post my good food writing sample. Please excuse the marks ups. It was my intent to discuss the points instead of posting this. However, since I found the story interesting, I decided to post it anyway. Hope you enjoy.
